A remarkable philanthropic gift for Harris Westminster
The Verdant Foundation has provided a[n annual] £250,000 gift to Harris Westminster Sixth Form, with a further pledge of up to £250,000 in match funding.
Now approaching its tenth year, Harris Westminster has helped change the lives of thousands of bright students from disadvantaged and ordinary backgrounds, giving them the education and support they need to access and thrive in the most competitive university courses and careers.
But to do this, we need to more than double the contact time between students and staff funded by government, including through our Saturday school. The additional time helps level the playing field for our students, who join us only in Year 12.
If we raise the match funding being offered by the Verdant Foundation, Harris Westminster will receive a minimum total of £750,000 in donations. This will fund all the additional hours our students need and enable even more deserving young people to benefit from Harris Westminster.
James Handscombe, Executive Principal of Harris Westminster, said:
"We want to thank the Verdant Foundation for this incredible gift, which will be used to provide bright but disadvantaged students with the education they need to fulfil their potential.
Our admissions process is designed to spot students with the most potential rather than just taking in those with the highest achievements, so while many of our youngsters leave with top grades, they don’t necessarily arrive with them. The time and investment in their sixth form education, however, means their futures can be transformed.
“As Harris Westminster approaches its tenth year, we are proud of everything we have achieved but ever-conscious that we rely on philanthropic support to be able to do it – so we look forward to an active and energetic campaign to raise the match funding the Verdant Foundation have so generously offered.”
Isabella Ma, Director of the Verdant Foundation, said:
"The Verdant Foundation is proud to support Harris Westminster Sixth Form. We are impressed by their commitment to providing a transformative education to students from all backgrounds. Education is a powerful tool for social mobility, and we believe HWSF's work is crucial in ensuring that all students have the opportunity to succeed. The match funding component of our donation is intended to encourage others to invest in HWSF's vital mission."
